Frida is loved for so many reasons, but I feel the most inspirational of them is that she and Diego's relationship mirrored a larger war between modernists who insisted that easel painting was for the rich and was dead because the mural was for the people and therefore alive. She radically inverted the focus of her compositions on the self and what would come to be called surrealism, though the European surrealists emerged more from poetry than painting she was beloved by them for marrying the two.
