Toulouse-Lautrec was one of the most important figures of late impressionism, in that he was multi-genre. He painted like an impressionist and made graphic designs for reproduction using limited palettes and incorporating the contour line into poster-making, something Warhol would later do and gain international notoriety for. Lautrec also understood photography in a way that was forward reaching - through portraiture was taken very seriously up to that point, he posed for photographs in drag, kimonos, clown makeup, etc... to debase the myth that artists need to be serious in order to be taken seriously. He believed you could go to your favorite bar in the evening, and paint the party from last night this morning. I should make a radio show like that.
