Maya
I have studied Meso-American Glyph decipherment for over 25 years now and what I owe to the Maya is the retention of the sign language as depicted on pottery, murals and inscriptions, pages, and scrolls that is the same as the language my deaf aunt used with me when I was little. Entranced with what we could find pre-web every library was scoured and every bookstore devoured. What the Greeks were to the Romans the Maya were to the greeks- our world history recorded by descriptions handed down from our ancestors. To not study the classical civilizations of Native America is to not perpetuate our truths and therefore I will continue to glean the knowledge of our ancestors and attempt the cultural translation necessary to both traditional and contemporary audiences.
